Mercosur: Sanitary requirements for animal imports agreed

-

The sanitary requirements for animal imports were agreed upon by the Mercosur Animal Health Commission (CSA) during the working meeting held from 22 to 26 October 2018 in Montevideo.

Bovine,buffalos and equines

The delegations from Argentina, Brazil, Paraguay and Uruguay analyzed the measures for the entry of bovine and buffalo cattle for fattening, as well as equine and equine embryos for immediate slaughter.

The technically agreed regulatory projects were submitted by the Commission to the following Mercosur bodies for final approval, says Senasa.

Bovine semen

Mercosur technicians adapted the sanitary requirements for the importation of bovine semen considering mitigation measures for lumpy skin disease, as recommended by the World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE), at the request of Argentina. This is expected to advance the sanitary negotiation for the exchange of this commodity with South Africa, which is in high demand by the sector.

swine fever

Brazil presented the health measures it adopted for the occurrence of swine fever classical (PPC) in the State of Ceará, located in the area not free of the disease and, therefore, does not modify its health situation.

Regarding the recent occurrence of African swine fever (ASF) in China and Belgium, the Mercosur states outlined the measures adopted to prevent entry and the exchange of information within the region. They all agreed on the technical criteria to be followed.

Sheep and goats

Mercosur delegates will update sanitary requirements for the importation of sheep and goats for fattening and reproduction and for immediate slaughter at the meeting to be held in March 2019.

What is animal health?

Animal health is the concept that refers to the health of animals destined for human consumption and addresses both the prevention of the entry of diseases through control and the eradication of those present in the country. FAO focuses on transboundary diseases, diseases transmitted by insects or production and hygiene diseases, among others.
