Mercosur (Argentina, Brazil, Paraguay and Uruguay) has made progress with Canada in negotiations to reach a free trade agreement, the Argentine Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Worship reported here today.

"The fifth round of negotiations between Mercosur and Canada took place in Ottawa between March 22 and 29, during which progress was made towards the conclusion of a free trade agreement," the Foreign Ministry said in Buenos Aires.

During the course of the meetings, "chapters such as Trade Facilitation, Good Regulatory Practices and Intellectual Property made considerable progress."", reported the San Martín Palace.

Negotiations related to the investment chapter also continued.

"Argentina and other Mercosur countries hope to increase their exports to Canada with the signing of a Free Trade Agreement," the official statement added.

Based on the progress made, the parties agreed on "an intensive work plan that includes the phased conclusion of different chapters and meetings in Montevideo, Buenos Aires, Ottawa and Brasilia with the aim of concluding the entire negotiation by the end of 2019."

"Canada has free trade and integration agreements in force with 43 countries that represent 53,7% of global GDP," said Argentina's Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Worship.

Mercosur is currently negotiating trade agreements with the European Union, the EFTA countries (Switzerland, Norway, Iceland and Liechtenstein), Singapore and the Republic of Korea.
