The Business Alliance for Secure Commerce (BASC) announced on Monday (26.052025) that Erik Moncayo was elected by consensus as the new president of the Regional Private Sector Consultative Group (RPSG) for the Americas and the Caribbean., an organization that collaborates closely with the World Customs Organization (WCO).
This new leadership marks the beginning of a phase aimed at deepening regional cooperation in secure trade, customs facilitation, and innovation, from the perspective of the private sector. Erik Moncayo's term will extend for three years, succeeding Alfonso Rojas, representative of ASAPRA/CARGODEC Mexico, who completed a successful six-year term at the head of the RPSG.
Mr. Moncayo, who has extensive experience with U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP), including roles as Deputy Commissioner of the Office of International Affairs and CBP Attaché in Mexico and Panama, said during his acceptance speech: “Collaboration between the public and private sectors is essential to achieving secure, transparent, and efficient supply chains. Our work embodies the shared values and objectives of the WCO and the RPSG.".
The RPSG is the WCO's advisory body advising on customs and international trade issues from the perspective of the private sector, in accordance with its reference regulation.
In the Americas and the Caribbean, this work is coordinated through the Customs Support Group (CSS), comprised of more than 30 representatives of companies, associations, and organizations with experience in international trade and committed to developing more efficient, inclusive, and secure customs policies.
The WCO currently comprises 186 members, managing more than 98% of global trade. These countries are organized into six regions (see map on the cover), with South America, North America, Central America, and the Caribbean being one of them. These regions comprise 33 nations, including Argentina, Brazil, Mexico, Canada, the United States, Colombia, Chile, Peru, Guatemala, El Salvador, Panama, and Uruguay, among others. This regional structure is key to coordinating and channeling the actions of the RPSG for the benefit of safe and efficient international trade.
For more than two decades, BASC has maintained institutional cooperation with the WCO to promote a culture of trade security and trade facilitation. In 2007, the two entities signed a Memorandum of Understanding formalizing this strategic alliance. Since then, BASC has actively participated in forums such as the Private Sector Consultative Group (PSG), made up of 30 representatives from diverse regions and industries.
According to the same official source, Moncayo's arrival at the RPSG heralds a period of continuity and strengthening of the relationship between the private sector and customs, aligned with the WCO's objective of building a more agile, secure, and transparent global customs system.
