Argentina's trade balance remains positive in August 2024

Argentina obtained a trade surplus USD 1.963 billion in August. With this result, the country has had nine consecutive months with a positive balance in the trade balance, according to data from the National Institute of Statistics and Census (INDEC) published this Thursday (19.09.2024).

exports Sales totaled USD 6.793. They rose 14,9% compared to August 2023, mainly due to an increase in quantities (20,7%), as prices fell (4,8%). Sales of Manufactures of agricultural origin (28,5%), Manufactures of industrial origin (21,4%), Primary products (16,8%) and Fuels and Energy (11,8%) stand out, in that order.

imports Imports of goods amounted to USD 4.830 billion, which represents a year-on-year decrease of 29,8%, due to falls in imported quantities (-632,5%) and in prices (-15,9%). Import values ​​of almost all economic uses decreased. The most significant decreases occurred in the imported quantities of Capital goods (-41%), Intermediate goods (-34,7%), Parts and accessories for capital goods (-34,4%), Fuels and lubricants (-27,2%) and Consumer goods (-21,4%). In the case of Passenger motor vehicles, the quantity grew strongly (632,5%).

According to INDEC, in August the volume of commercial exchange (exports plus imports) was USD 11.623 billion, which implies a decrease of 9,2% year-on-year. 

From this exchange, shipments to the main countries grew destinationsIn detail: MERCOSUR (15,9%), China (29,9%), USMCA (Economic zone made up of the USA, Canada and Mexico 12,1%), European Union (6,5%) and Chile (41,0%).

Meanwhile, purchases decreased from all major origin destinations. Specifically: MERCOSUR (-20,8%), China (-47,1%), USMCA (economic zone made up of the USA, Canada and Mexico -36,3%), European Union (-21,2%) and Chile (-5,4%).

8 months of 2024 

To recap, last month Argentina recorded a trade surplus of USD 1.963 billion. And between January and August (8 months of 2024) the green rises to $14.151 million, as exports rose to USD 52.190 billion and imports totaled USD 38.039 billion.
