Guatemala achieves positive results in the fight against customs fraud and smuggling

The Superintendency of Tax Administration (SAT) of Guatemala announced the positive results of coordinated actions with different institutions to combat actions against smuggling and customs fraud, implemented in the first semester of 2022These actions are part of the strengthening of risk management and customs controls carried out within the framework of the Interinstitutional Council against Smuggling and Customs Fraud (COINCON).

Thus, the official data provided indicate that, across January and June of this year, were seized goods valued at 12 million 857 thousand 995 quetzales.

It was also indicated that the taxes not collected amounted to 3 million 615 thousand 422,29 quetzales.

They were also made 242 inter-institutional actions scattered below:

  • Binational operation (Guatemala and Honduras): 1
  • Road operations: 156
  •  Customs interventions: 173
  •  Raids: 12

Additionally, we received 232 complaints for such activities that promote illicit trade, according to the information provided.

About Coincon

El Interinstitutional Council against Smuggling and Customs Fraud (Coincon) in Guatemala was created by Decree 20 / 2006, Legal Provisions for the strengthening of the Tax Administration (art. 63 to 67) with the purpose of preventing and combating tax evasion and customs smuggling. In addition, this Interinstitutional Council is an advisory and consulting body of the SAT in the actions it undertakes to prevent and combat such crimes.

The problem of these illicit activities demands that Coincon, chaired by the SAT, implement a inter-institutional coordination, in accordance with such regulations. It also receives support from various chambers of the Guatemalan private sector.

Thus, Coincon is made up of the following institutions:

  • Chamber of Industry of Guatemala (CIG)
  • The Coordinating Committee of Agricultural, Commercial, Industrial and Financial Associations (CACIF).
