Despite the pandemic, illicit trade worldwide has increased considerably in terms of counterfeiting and smuggling, sometimes putting people's health at risk, according to specialists.
In Guatemala, a major operation was launched to enter warehouses and cellars. The raids were the result of a Investigation by the Superintendency of Tax Administration (SAT) in support of the Security Department of the Embassy of the United States of America in Guatemala. An organization dedicated to the Importation of products that constitute crimes of violation of intellectual property. This was reported by the SAT.
The operations consisted of 6 raids in the country, in October 2020The Transnational Criminal Investigation Unit of the Public Prosecutor's Office and the National Civil Police of Guatemala also took part in the investigation.
These raids were aimed at “investigating importers who bring in merchandise with counterfeit brands, including tennis shoes, clothing, emblems and machinery used to print counterfeit brands in the country. This merchandise is distributed in stores and markets in Guatemala, causing consumer fraud, as the products do not meet the quality standards indicated by the brands. It also creates unfair competition for importers and distributors authorized by the brands to market their products,” explained official sources.
