The problem is that we cannot wait for governments to do it for us. We have a big State for small things, and a small one for big things, since construction is in the small, big details. From this framework, Eduardo A. Duhalde has spoken with ADUANA NEWS, offering the following reflections as he welcomes 2014:
AN What would be the relevant details to build a better tomorrow?
We need what I call the inauguration of a Second Republic, founded on a commitment by all political forces with electoral representation to amend the Constitution. We cannot allow any one branch of the State to cede any power to another. We need a new pact where the leadership as a whole agrees on four or five State policies, that is, fundamental agreements that mark a national course that is sustained despite the change of colour of the rulers in power and that remain outside the political-party discussion.
AN -What is happening to us Argentines that we are so confused?
We have to realize that we are still democratically underdeveloped and, if we want more democracy, we need more democrats, stable and reliable institutions, an end to hyper-presidentialism and to the saviors of the country.
AN -How can we make 2014 a memorable, exciting, unforgettable, special year?
It is time to free up productive forces to make up for the time that has been lost in useless confrontations. Argentina is the world's leading producer of food per capita, as well as being a country with incipient industrial development; we are the world's leading exporter of biodiesel, we export small nuclear reactors for peaceful use, we put satellites in space. We have the largest concentration of biotechnology companies in Latin America, we produce and export software and video games. Our reserves of lithium and unconventional gas and oil are among the largest on the planet. We cannot afford to waste another minute.
YEAR-You are a father and grandfather. What values have you passed on to your children as a guide in their lives and would you recommend to Argentine citizens?
Pursue your dreams, no matter how big and utopian they may seem. I am a believer and I believe that we must listen carefully to what our Holy Father Francis preaches to the world from Rome. His guidance is a gift from heaven that we should not waste.
AN – As a respected and observant citizen, what would be your message of hope to end 2013?
I am an optimist to the core. Our problems are surmountable and the recipe is, quite simply, more democracy. I say this in the sense that we must broaden and deepen it, so that it reaches all Argentines and takes root in the cultural habits that govern our political and social relations. In this way, it will not be necessary for another thirty years of democratic institutions to pass before we can celebrate with a full glass. I am absolutely confident that democracy has its own corrective mechanisms, but, above all, we have a people of exceptional creativity and courage that has decided that it is the best system for life as a whole, forever. That is our greatest asset today.
