The United States has decided to exempt Argentina from a measure announced two months ago by President Donald Trump that imposes new tariffs on steel and aluminum exports.
In other words, Starting at midnight on Tuesday (1.5.2018), Argentine exporters will not pay an import tariff of 25 percent on steel and 10 percent on aluminum.
In March, the US president surprised the world with the protectionist measure, claiming that he was defending national security by protecting a sector of his country that has lost competitiveness due to inferiorities in the international market.
Trump, however, had given a wait-and-see period while he negotiated some kind of adjustment with allied countries, and others with which he shares national security interests, to whom he asked to present arguments to determine whether or not they were excluded from the new tariffs.
That deadline ended at midnight on Monday (30.4.2018).
In a statement released in the evening, The president says that neither South Korea (with whom he has already signed an agreement) Neither Brazil, Argentina nor Australia will be charged the tariff in the futureIn this last case, Trump notes that the permanent exclusion of tariffs with Australia and South America is subject to the agreements being finalized.
He also says that Mexico, Canada and the European Union are exempt for one monthas, until June 1st, while negotiations continue.
Everyone else will start paying from now on.
