El First Forum of the Regional Network of Customs Laboratories in the Americas and the Caribbean was successfully held virtually on Wednesday (15.02.2023). The historic event was attended by 21 countries (Argentina, Belize, Bolivia, Brazil, Canada, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Cuba, Ecuador, United States, Guatemala, Honduras, Jamaica, Mexico, Nicaragua, Panama, Paraguay, Peru, Dominican Republic and Venezuela), whose representatives were public officials.

With the topic “Laboratory Management”, the webinar was led by the head of the Central Laboratory of SUNAT of Peru, Eng. Wellinton Tello, who was accompanied by Daniel Cardozo of the Directorate of Tariff and Trade Affairs of the World Customs Organization (WCO).

According to the WCO Regional Vice-Presidency for the Americas and the Caribbean, the objective of the event was to establish a dialogue space to share opinions, technical recommendations, national and regional criteria, as well as good practices on the proposed topics in order to facilitate fair collection and legitimate trade.

In this regard, it is important to note that customs laboratories provide the scientific expertise necessary to enforce customs regulations. Their tasks include: chemical analysis to determine the tariff classification and tariffs of goods, control of hazardous substances, determination of product authenticity, among others.

These entities play an essential role in ensuring the integrity of borders.
