Meeting of Customs Directors of the Americas and the Caribbean began in Honduras

In order to articulate a plan for improvement, exchange of experiences, good practices and the establishment of initiatives that strengthen trade facilitation between member countries of the World Customs Organization from May 02 to 06, 2022, Honduras, through its Customs Administration, is hosting three important events for customs services in the region and the world.

This is the XXIV Regional Conference of General Directors of Customs (CRDGA), the II Joint Customs-Private Sector Forum and the XLII Meeting of National Directors of Customs of Latin America, Spain and Portugal within the framework of the signing of the Multilateral Customs Agreement of Latin America, Spain and Portugal (COMALEP), under the virtual-semi-presential modality.

The agenda begins with the XXIV Regional Conference of General Directors of Customs under the motto “Smart Customs connecting to a safer world” that is developed And May 02 03, coordinated by the Regional Vice Presidency of the World Customs Organization for the Americas and the Caribbean and the Multilateral Customs Agreement of Latin America, Spain and Portugal (COMALEP) so that customs administrations in the Americas and the Caribbean region can strengthen levels of cooperation, exchange of information and best practices for the development and implementation of regional strategies.

During the CRDGA, Antigua and Barbuda, Argentina, Belize, Bolivia, Brazil, Canada, Chile, Colombia, Cuba, Ecuador, El Salvador, United States of America, Guatemala, Guyana, Honduras, Jamaica, Mexico, Nicaragua, Panama, Paraguay, Peru, Dominican Republic and Uruguay will participate.

The second meeting is the II Joint Forum (Customs-Private Enterprise) to be held on May 04th called “Customs and Private Sector, same objectives for safer trade” in which the Directors of the Customs of the Region and the Honduran and regional private sector participate, in order to achieve common objectives through initiatives that create synergy between both sectors.

This meeting is part of Pillar II of the SAFE Framework of the World Customs Organization (WCO), which recognizes the importance of a good relationship and cooperation between Customs and private companies, guiding facilitation strategies to achieve joint work, making customs initiatives and mechanisms available to private companies that guarantee the conditions to ensure and promote the ease of international trade.

And the third meeting of the 05-06 May the XLII Meeting of National Directors of Customs of Latin America, Spain and Portugal, which is carried out within the framework of the Multilateral Customs Agreement of Latin America, Spain and Portugal (COMALEP), established as a useful instrument to strengthen mutual assistance in the fight against fraud and cooperation, whose permanent secretariat is located in the United Mexican States, who is in charge of organizing the annual meeting between the General Directors of Customs.

Occasion in which the Customs authorities of the countries that are part of COMALEP evaluate the progress of the Customs in matters of customs procedures, valuation, nomenclature, trade facilitation, counterfeiting, among others and that are related to the guidelines of the World Customs Organization (WCO).

COMALEP aims to provide cooperation and technical assistance between Customs to ensure the correct application of customs laws;
institutionalize cooperation between the Parties and combat customs fraud and illegal activities.

The countries that form part of COMALEP are Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Cuba, Ecuador, El Salvador, Spain, Guatemala, Honduras, Mexico, Nicaragua, Panama, Paraguay, Peru, Portugal, Dominican Republic, Uruguay and Venezuela.
