The foreign ministers of Chile and Paraguay, Andrés Allamand and Euclides Acevedo, respectively, signed this Wednesday (01.12.2021) in Santiago a Free Trade Agreement between both nations, whose negotiations concluded last October.
This instrument modernizes the regulatory framework and the existing bilateral relationship, which until now was governed by the Economic Complementation Agreement ACE 35, signed by Chile and the Mercosur countries in the 90s, focusing particularly on tariff liberalization, the Chilean Foreign Ministry said in a statement.
"This agreement includes provisions aimed at increasing trade and promoting job creation in our countries, which will have a positive impact on post-pandemic economic recovery, and also incorporates issues such as gender, labor issues and the environment," Allamand told reporters.
The Chilean foreign minister highlighted this regional integration work and expressed that his government "considers it important to move forward with the implementation of the Bioceanic Road Corridor, in order to improve regional connectivity and the flow of people and goods between our countries and the Asia-Pacific markets." He also said that "it would be important to have Paraguay's participation in the Humboldt Project, which will digitally unite the Southern Cone of America with Asia."
In this regard, the Paraguayan foreign minister expressed his government's support for the Humboldt Project and highlighted the importance of the Bioceanic Corridor that will link the Atlantic with the Pacific and will have the ports of Chile as its main destination and technical stopover.
At the ceremony, held at the Chilean Foreign Ministry, The ministers also signed five bilateral instruments relating to the reciprocal recognition of driving licenses, cooperation in Defense, the fight against human trafficking, cooperation in telecommunications and the digital economy, and cooperation in diplomatic academies between both countries.
