This weekend, the first natural gas exchange between Chile and Argentina was completed, a milestone that re-establishes relations regarding the trade of this fuel, after more than a decade of suspension.
It was in November 2006 when, as a result of an increase in consumption and union problems in the trans-Andean country, the then Secretary of Energy of the Government of Néstor Kirchner, Daniel Cameron, decided to suspend the sale of natural gas.
According to Diario Financiero, the beginning of the first exchange, compromised the en2 million cubic meters were transported from the province of Neuquén and finished at the Quinter LNG terminalor, which was undergoing scheduled maintenance.
Meanwhile, 48 hours later, Chile completed the shipment of another 2 million cubic meters.
Marcelo Tokman, general manager of the National Petroleum Company, ENAP, said that this fact “It marks a milestone in the energy exchange between both countries, ten years after the gas crisis, and opens the possibility of new agreements that strengthen the mutually beneficial relationship between both nations.”.
And this milestone is also close to home for Tokman, as he was the one who had to manage the attacks caused in Chile by the suspension of supplies from Argentina in 2006, while he was serving as Minister of Energy during Michelle Bachelet's first term.
