Chile assumes presidency of Pacific Alliance and will then transfer it to Peru

-

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Chile reported this Wednesday (28.06.2023/XNUMX/XNUMX) that the country assumed the "pro tempore" presidency of the Pacific Alliance for one month and will transfer the function to Peru on August 1, in order to try to overcome the conflict that paralyzed the group, which also included Mexico and Colombia.

In a statement, Foreign Minister Alberto van Klaveren said that Chile recognizes "Peru's right to exercise the pro tempore presidency and in that spirit we have assumed the responsibility of acting as intermediaries to resolve this situation."

To ease these tensions, Chile yesterday assumed the responsibility of leading the bloc, which also includes Colombia, for one month, during a meeting in the city of Santiago attended by representatives of the four member countries.

In addition to Van Klaveren, the meeting was attended by the Mexican ambassador to Chile and designated Foreign Minister, Alicia Bárcena; the Peruvian chargé d'affaires in Chile, Renzo Villa; the Colombian chargé d'affaires in Chile, René Correa; and the Chilean undersecretary for International Economic Relations, Claudia Sanhueza.

The Chilean foreign minister said that the four countries "remain equally committed to the future of the Alliance and believe that we can effectively continue to advance to achieve the free movement of goods, services, capital and also people."

In this regard, Chile will work during the period to reactivate technical work in the more than 30 working groups, committees and subcommittees that address the Pacific Alliance, Van Klaveren said.

She explained that she will also seek to resume the updating of the Additional Protocol with the addition of two chapters on Gender and Trade and SMEs (small and medium-sized enterprises), as well as continue implementing the roadmaps on matters of Gender, Plastics and the regional digital market, and activate the international agenda of the Pacific Alliance.
