Chile: Customs of the Los Ríos Region holds coordination meetings with services and authorities

With the intention of expanding the scope of the work carried out by the Chilean National Customs Service in the Los Ríos Region, which supports foreign trade and local development, an institutional delegation held a series of meetings with local and regional authorities, the police, the Navy and other services.

The Director of the Regional Customs of Puerto Montt, Pablo Elvenberg, and the Administrator of Customs of Osorno, Olga Oyarzo, led the delegationIn Valdivia, they met with the Regional Presidential Delegate, Paola Peña; the Regional Governor of Los Ríos, Luis Cuvertino; the Head of the Los Ríos Police Region of the Investigative Police (PDI), Inspector Prefect Alex Schwarzenberg; the Head of the Los Ríos Zone of the Carabineros, General Alex Muñoz; Commander Francisco Arias, of the Maritime Governorate of Valdivia, and the Regional Director of the Agricultural and Livestock Service (SAG), Jorge Oltra.

Along with presenting the role that Customs plays in the area and the challenges that the institution has in the protection of trade and citizenship, the following issues were addressed with each of the authorities: inter-institutional coordination at the operational level and in the inspection processes that they carry out jointly at the control points.

In the case of the Investigation police (PDI), the issue of the risks posed by drug trafficking at maritime and land borders was also discussed, and with Carabineros the coordination between Customs teams and OS7, OS9 and SEBV was deepened, as well as the need to generate training on customs regulations and exemptions for police personnel and on the safe handling of weapons and ammunition for officials in the event of seizures.

With the Armada It was agreed that coordinated work would be carried out on inspection operations of common interest, maintaining the coordinated work with the Port Captaincies of Corral and Valdivia, in the control of maritime foreign trade, anchoring reviews and control of international yachts. In addition, common risks were analyzed in the area of ​​joint inspections and the generation of mutual training in the area of ​​customs regulations for the control and inspection of shipping agencies, ranches and control of foreign vessels in transit through national waters.

At the meeting with the Agricultural and Livestock Service (SAG ) A coordinated effort was agreed upon to conduct anchoring reviews at the port of Corral and a review was made of the joint inspection work in view of the reopening of the borders in the Los Ríos Region and the need for mutual training in the field of the CITES convention, phytosanitary and customs regulations.

In addition to the working meetings with these institutions, the delegation of the Puerto Montt Regional Customs Office and the Osorno Customs Administration also held protocol meetings with the Regional Presidential Delegate of Los Ríos, Paola Peña, and with the Regional Governor of Los Ríos, Luis Cuvertino.

Both authorities highlighted the visit and the Presidential Delegate requested more information on the infrastructure and equipment requirements for Customs in Los Ríos, mainly at the Hua Hum border crossing in relation to regional budget financing of mobile kennels, among other projects. For his part, the Regional Governor also promised to support requests for financing for possible projects of the service at a regional level, in addition to highlighting the importance of the permanent presence of Customs in Valdivia.

El Regional Director of Puerto Montt Customs, Pablo Elvenberg, referred, in this regard, to these activities explaining that "this is a very important and very necessary instance since, as a Service, we must maintain permanent communication with the regional authorities, and in these meetings through the presentation of the service at a national and regional level this objective is ensured, as well as listening to the requirements and needs of this region in relation to our area of ​​competence through its authorities."

“For our Service and its work teams, it is very important to have a constant and coordinated relationship with all the institutions with which we share roles in the control and inspection processes. This joint work is what ultimately allows us to analyze risks by sharing integrated information and guaranteeing efficient execution of the various types of customs procedures within our work,” he added.

For its part, the Administrator of Customs of Osorno, Olga Oyarzo, stressed that “these visits serve to strengthen the presence of Customs in the Los Rios Region, where we continue to work and manage to improve our functions despite not being established in that territory. That is why the work meetings we had allow us to continue defining more clearly the challenges and approaches of the work we have to develop in the area.”
