Central America advances in managing border modernization

One of the worst enemies of competitiveness is the inefficiency in the management of border posts. This has led Central American countries to take action to overcome the difficulties that prevent trade from being facilitated. Thus, the Secretariat for Central American Economic Integration (SIECA) has reported that it will be carrying out the Second Regional Workshop on Coordinated Border Management, from September 5 to 7, 2023, in Guatemala.

Specifically, the initiative, which is managed by SIECA with the support of the Spain-SICA Fund and the European Union, is intended to strengthen capacities in customs, economic integration and foreign trade in the region. The workshops will feature the participation of Administrators, Deputy Administrators of the Customs Services y Sanitary and Phytosanitary Measures Authorities (MSF) from border posts in Central America.

SIECA has stated that participants will be able to learn about the work agenda regional in the field of the Central American Economic Integration Process, the Deep Integration Process, the Central American Strategy for Trade Facilitation and Competitiveness with an Emphasis on Coordinated Border Management.

They will also receive an update on regional regulations, Central American Strategy for Trade Facilitation and Competitiveness with Emphasis on Coordinated Border Management, Deep Integration between Guatemala, Honduras and El Salvador, Coordinated Border Management, IT tools to support trade and practical case studies to diagnose border posts and develop recommendations. The uses and benefits of the Digital Platform Central American Trade Authority (PDCC) and other IT platforms supporting trade managed by SIECA.

This orientation regarding the implementation of the Coordinated Border Management model is important, since the adoption of the concept helps to reduce times in operations and clearance of goods, establish public-private alliances, modernize coordinated, unique and automated control processes, infrastructure and equipment, as well as improve the productivity of border authorities; consequently, to strengthen the competitiveness of the countries' foreign trade.
