The Secretariat of Agricultural Defense of the Federative Republic of Brazil published this Wednesday (27.2.2019) in the Official Gazette the Resolution that suspends the Work Plan agreed upon for the shipment of fresh fruit from our country.
Authorities from the National Service for Agri-Food Health and Quality (Senasa) and the Secretariat of Agroindustry of the Nation – together with the provincial governments of Neuquén, Río Negro and Mendoza, and the private sector – are taking steps to reverse the suspension of pear and apple exports ordered by Brazil following the detection of codling moth (Cydia pomonella) larvae in shipments inspected at the border, the statement said.
“This suspension is a yellow light that Brazil is giving us. We are working with each of the sectors involved, public and private, to get the suspension lifted as soon as possible.”, explained the vice president of Senasa, Guillermo Rossi.
In order to resume exports of both fruits as soon as possible, Senasa is holding negotiations with the Plant Health Department of the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Supply (MAPA) in order to expand the technical information sent and the measures taken with respect to said interceptions based on the work plan. To this end, a video conference has already been arranged in the next few hours to normalize trade.
At the same time, work is being done with producers and exporters whose shipments sent to the neighboring country were found to contain live larvae of the pest, with measures such as the suspension of establishments, production units, packing sheds and exporters. This also involves documentary and technical research to find the reasons for the presence of the pest as agreed in said work plan.
“We have been applying all the measures included in the work plan agreed with Brazil in 2015, which until now had yielded very good results, but this year there have been interceptions. That is why we are stepping up our controls, a task that we are carrying out together with the provinces and the private sector, with whom we met last week,” explained Rossi.
It should be noted that this work plan involves the implementation of a Risk Mitigation System with a series of technical and sanitary measures that tend to minimize or reduce the risk of transmission of the codling moth, given that Brazil is free of the pest.
