Argentina closes pork imports from Germany due to outbreak of African swine fever

-

The National Service of Health and Agri-Food Quality (Senasa) ordered the closure of the import of pork and by-products from Germany due to an outbreak of African swine fever (ASF) in that country and analyzes what measures it takes with sales in the rest of Europe, so that health protocols can be guaranteed.

German health authorities have notified the World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE) of the first occurrence of African swine fever on their territory..

The disease in Germany was detected from a sample of a decomposing wild boar carcass found in a forest near Poland, a country where the disease is present.

The samples were analysed at the German national laboratory, the Friedrich-Loeffler Institute, using the PCR technique, which allows the identification of ASF virus material even in decomposing corpses.

Also The closure of the rest of the European countries is being analyzed until they inform Argentina of the risk mitigation measures established regarding this notification., and the reinforcement and adaptation of surveillance actions, in accordance with the international recommendations of the OIE.

ASF has spread across the Asian and European continents in recent years. Argentina and other countries in America are free of the diseaseThis disease has a high mortality rate in the pig species, there are no vaccines and it affects both domestic and wild pigs and is not transmitted to humans, reported Senasa.

Its transmission to other pigs is through direct contact between animals, reproductive material but also through ticks, people, and elements used by animals (fomites).

Contaminated foods are also of particular importance, given that the ASF virus has a high survival rate in fresh products, some salted and cured products.
