The National Customs Service reported that last Monday a team of inspectors from the agency managed to seize around eight kilos of ecstasy at the Santiago International Airport, the main airport in Chile.
According to the information, the Metropolitan Customs team - supported by x-ray machines and specially trained dogs - found the drug hidden in a luggage from a flight from Spain.
"In the morning hours (Monday) checked luggage was detected with a false bottom, so it was marked for inspection and subjected to the recognition of canine teams, who confirmed the presence of an illicit substance," said the officer. Regional Director of the Metropolitan Customs, Rodrigo Díaz Alegría.
He indicated that the luggage belonged to a Brazilian citizen who came from Madrid and was carrying inside 8,2 kilos of ecstasy.
"The two packages of drugs were vacuum-sealed, and when tested with a narcotics analysis equipment, they tested positive for ecstasy. The Metropolitan Prosecutor's Office of the West was immediately informed and adopted the corresponding procedures," Díaz Alegría added.
In this way, the regional authority highlighted the work of the Service's inspection teams at the country's main air terminal, ensuring that "the role of Customs officials is essential to disrupt this type of operations that allow us to remove from circulation a significant number of units of this and other drugs, in addition to generating investigations that allow us to dismantle the criminal gangs that are behind these crimes," he stressed.
