Within the framework of the strategy to raise awareness and build capacity in the field of trade facilitation, the Guatemalan Customs Superintendent, Werner Ovalle, held a meeting this Thursday (16.09.2021/XNUMX/XNUMX) with participants from the Association of Students of Economic and Business Sciences of Rafael Landívar University (AECE-URL).
During the virtual meeting, attendees had the opportunity to learn about “The importance of trade facilitation and the role of the Guatemalan Customs Office as Regional Vice-President of the WCO".
In this regard, Werner Ovalle stated that "from the Guatemalan Customs Administration we work on a series of Strategies for strengthening trade facilitation in Guatemala, Central America and Latin America, within the framework of the Regional Vice-Presidency of the WCO and the presidency of the Central American Customs Committee.”
Ovalle stressed that “trade facilitation is not only the responsibility of the customs service.” In this regard, he clarified that “everyone must assume their role, as well as strengthen public-private ties.”
Regarding the private sector, Ovalle stressed that “it must promote and strengthen the secure logistics chain.”
He also clarified: “Trade facilitation initiatives do not mean neglecting customs control.”
To this end, the head of Customs assured that "the authorization of the Authorized Economic Operator is a sign of confidence between the private sector and customs services to build a safe country hand in hand with competitiveness."
The meeting is part of the WCO's commitment to promote initiatives and policies to raise awareness about trade facilitation and to ensure its proper functioning in Guatemala and the region.
