Under the name "Trade facilitation and customs: achievements and challenges” The Ninth Academic Conference on Customs Law was held on Friday (18.11.2022) in the Uruguayan city of Montevideo. The closing ceremony was attended by Head of the National Customs Directorate, Jaime Borgiani, who considered this space for analysis.

Speaking at the event, Borgiani stressed the satisfaction of being present at the meeting, held in a hybrid format: “I am happy to be here with the academy to analyze the same issues and the same problems that affect foreign trade.” He added: “The problems are not those of the State, the Academy or the unions: the problems are everyone’s.”

In this regard, the Director pointed out the need for “Customs to continue participating in the academic event with its specialists”, and therefore proposed organizing such an event “jointly”.

In turn, the  General Coordinator of the Conference, Dr. Andrés Varela, thanked the participants and announced that the next academic session could be held in August 2023 with the aim of analyzing customs law for the next 10 years, on the occasion of the tenth edition of the academic session.

Thus, the specialists generated debates framed in the following topics: “Achievements and challenges of Customs regarding trade facilitation”, “The challenges of trade facilitation and customs control”, “Different perspectives on trade facilitation” and “Towards effective trade facilitation”.

The ninth edition of the Academic Conference on Customs Law was organized by the Academic Units: Customs Law (Law) and Legal Regime of Foreign Trade II: Customs Law (Bachelor's Degree in International Relations), with the support of the Institute of Public Finance of the Faculty of Law, of the largest public university in Uruguay, the University of the Republic (UdelaR).
