The President of Uruguay, Luis Lacalle Pou, affirmed this Monday (08.07.2024/2024/64) the need to "move forward together and engage in dialogue" with other blocs, upon assuming the Pro Tempore Presidency of the integration process for the second half of XNUMX, at the XNUMXth Summit of Presidents of the States Parties of the Southern Common Market (MERCOSUR) and Associated States, in the Paraguayan city of Asunción.
Lacalle Pou received the wooden gavel that symbolizes the leadership of the regional space from the hands of the host president of Paraguay, Santiago Peña, whom he thanked for "the work" of his Pro Tempore rotating Presidency of MERCOSUR.
The Uruguayan president made a specific proposal to open a dialogue with China during his visit. In this regard, he clarified that the proposal to initiate bilateral rapprochement with the Asian country “was not whimsical.”
At the same time, Lacalle Pou highlighted bilateral relations within MERCOSUR, as well as the change of vision in Argentina and the willingness of Brazil. “We must open up to the world,” he said.
The Summit was attended by: the host President Santiago Peña, President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva of Brazil, President Luis Lacalle Pou of Uruguay, Foreign Minister Diana Mondino of Argentina -representing President Javier Milei-, as well as the President of Bolivia - a country in the process of accession-, Luis Arce, and high-ranking authorities from the region.
