The countries of the European Union and Mercosur exchanged views on how to move forward towards the ratification and entry into force of the free trade agreement between the two regions, during a meeting held on Monday (14.12.2020).
This has been indicated by the statement issued by the Uruguayan Foreign Ministry, in the days before the neighboring country takes over the presidency of the regional integration bloc.
The official document states that the parties reiterated “its commitment to effectively implement the international commitments set out in the Agreement, including the Paris Agreement".
In this way, the blocks will intensify contacts for “improve information exchange, increasing dialogue “policy-based dialogue and the identification of areas of cooperation, the latter through the European Initiative Team discussed at the Conference. This process and the resulting actions should focus in particular on areas of public concern linked to the Agreement, including deforestation.”
At the same time, the countries "expressed their conviction that cooperation to establish the appropriate conditions for the entry into force of the Agreement will strengthen their potential to achieve the shared overarching goal of sustainable development, in compliance with the principles and guidelines of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development".
The deal will be the result of two decades of negotiations. It would create a market of 800 million people where tariffs on European exports would be reduced, border inspections would be reduced, bureaucracy would be cut and political and cultural relations would be strengthened.
