European Union sets the course for its trade policy for the coming years

-

The European Commission has today (18.02.2021) set out its trade strategy for the coming years. The renewed approach will be geared towards adapting the bloc to new global challenges such as economic recovery, ecological and digital transformations, strengthening multilateralism and reforming global trade rules, the Commission said. release.

The best way to ensure the prosperity of the European Union (EU) is to continue trading with its global partners. The bloc is and will remain a champion of openness and international cooperation, a global economic power and a leader in economic growth, but not by being left behind, the document explains.

In this regard, the Executive Vice President and Trade Commissioner Valdis Dombrovskis, He said: “The challenges we face require a new strategy. We need open, rules-based trade to help restore growth and job creation after COVID-19. Also, trade policy must fully support ecological and digital transformations of our economy and lead global efforts to reform the WTO.”

The new strategy will therefore strengthen trade's capacity to support both digital and climate transitions.

By strengthening its alliances, such as the Transatlantic Partnership, together with a greater focus on neighbouring countries and Africa, the EU will be better able to shape global change.

With this strategy, Brussels is trying to show that it remains the main defender of free trade. But at the same time it will be more rigid when it comes to defending its interests and enforcing agreements.

“The EU will adopt a a more assertive and firm approach to the implementation and enforcement of its trade agreements, fighting unfair trade and addressing sustainability concerns. The EU is stepping up its efforts to ensure that its agreements deliver the negotiated benefits for its workers, farmers and citizens,” the statement said.

The European Commission recalls that the EU “will have to operate in a new multipolar global order marked by growing tensions” and therefore “must equip itself with tools to operate in a more hostile international environment, if necessary”.
