The European Union (EU) Agriculture Ministers confirmed on Monday (09.10.2017) their agreement with Chile on the trade of organic products, which involves the mutual recognition of the equivalence of their standards and control systems relating to this type of production.
The agreement, which will enter into force three months after both parties conclude their internal procedures to implement the agreement, seeks to promote the trade of organic products and promote the development of the organic sector in the EU.
It also establishes a system of cooperation, information exchange and dispute resolution in organic trade.
European products such as: unprocessed vegetables, unprocessed animal products such as honey, aquaculture products, agricultural processing, including wine, feed or seeds.
Chile also includes the categories of unprocessed plant products, honey, processed products such as wine, vegetative reproduction material and seeds.
This is the First "next generation" agreement on organic products trade and the first with a Latin American country.
The agreement still needs to be approved by the European Parliament before it can be adopted by the Council.
