SIECA head reiterates commitment to boost Central American SMEs

At a high-level forum, the new Secretary General of SIECA, Francisco A. Lima Mena, reiterated the commitment to to boost and enhance in a coordinated manner, support for micro, small and medium-sized enterprises (MSMEs) in the Central American region.

The forum, which was held virtually between July 20 and 22, 2021, was organized by the Center for the Promotion of Micro and Small Enterprises (Cenpromype), a specialized regional agency of the Central American Integration System (SICA), with the support of the United States Department of State and Taiwan.

At the closing of the meeting, Secretary Lima Mena emphasized that the Forum allowed business people, entrepreneurs, public and private representatives, academia and civil society in general to have the opportunity to build consensus on the necessary economic reactivation for the MSME sector, under a regional and community logic.
 
“Without a doubt, this type of initiative marks the path towards the economic and social recovery of the region, considering that They allow to strengthen the articulation “between the actors in the business ecosystem and national and regional bodies,” said the Secretary General of SIECA.

He also highlighted that the elements discussed and analyzed during the three days of the Forum will be valuable inputs for the “Regional Policy for Modernization and Transformation of SICA MSMEs.”

“The approach of Public policy aimed at MSMEs “It must be practical and pragmatic. The volatile and uncertain environments to which economic activities are exposed, especially those on a small scale, and the global challenges we are facing, such as a pandemic and climate change, require rapid and timely responses,” Lima Mena emphasized.

In this regard, he reiterated that SIECA is committed to continue working in a coordinated manner, side by side with CENPROMYPE and the Council of Ministers of Economic Integration (COMIECO) closely follows what has been discussed, in order to generate greater synergy with the Board of Directors of CENPROMYPE.

Finally, Lima Mena indicated that having greater spaces for coordination between COMIECO and the Board of Directors of CENPROMYPE will be key to addressing the needs of the MSME sector and thus taking advantage of the opportunities offered by the Central American market as a vehicle for democratising the economic development of the region.

According to surveys led by CENPROMYPE, together with the Ibero-American Observatory of MSMEs, there is a record of an impact of Covid-19 on companies in the region that affects their organization, their innovative activity and access to financing.SIECA Press Release)
