The Director General of the World Trade Organization (WTO), Roberto Azevedo, called for strengthening the international economic system to face the important challenges that currently arise.
Current tensions between trading partners are a major test for the WTO, Azevedo said at a meeting of trade ministers of European Union (EU) member countries.
The meeting is scheduled to take place between Thursday and Friday under Romania's presidency of the EU Council.
Noting that 2018 was the most active year in the past two decades in terms of economic disputes, Azevedo added: “We have to improve the international economic architecture.”
"We have to do everything possible to ease tensions in the economy," Azevedo stressed, adding that first "the situation must be de-escalated and then economic disputes resolved."

Met with EU trade ministers in Bucharest last night to discuss the current critical moment for global trade. Warning lights are flashing. We need to work together to diffuse tensions & that includes strengthening the trading system: https://t.co/J1eHBAGGQ4 @ro2019eu @Trade_EU
