The European Commission has already started preparing measures to respond to possible US tariffs on EU vehicle imports and will submit them for consultations with Washington within the framework of the World Trade Organisation (WTO), European Trade Commissioner Cecilia Malmstrom said on Friday (22.2.2019).
"We do not know whether tariffs will be applied on vehicles and car parts or not, but in this case we have already started to draw up a list of rebalancing measures; if tariffs are applied, we will immediately publish this list for formal consultations, as required by the WTO and as we did in the case of steel and aluminium," said the European Commissioner.
On June 1, 2018, tariffs of 25% on steel imports and 10% on aluminum imports from the European Union, Canada and Mexico came into effect in the United States.
In addition, US President Donald Trump has threatened to impose 20% tariffs on EU cars.
The European Commission appealed to the WTO over Washington's actions, and then activated 25% tariffs on imports of certain products from the US worth 2.800 billion euros, to rebalance the situation under World Trade Organisation rules.
