The modernization and strengthening of the role of the World Trade Organization (WTO) could be on the agenda of the Group of 20 (G20) summit in Buenos Aires scheduled for next November.
Public Policy Recommendation
It is one of the policy recommendations submitted to the Argentine president, Mauricio Macri, in the Think 20 Communication (T20)
According to the forum document, "The G20 should start dialogue to redesign the World Trade Organization (WTO) and thus avoid an escalation of trade frictions. "
This is a modernization to "facilitate societies to meet productive, technological and social challenges," the statement says.
Mar del Plata Declaration
The G20 Trade and Investment Ministers met in the city of Mar del Plata, agreed on the need to promote a reform of the WTO to be more responsive to the challenges facing trade today.
Increased conflict
Trade tensions between China and the US, increased in March 2018 after US President Donald Trump announce import tariffs on steel and aluminum.
Since then, both countries have imposed several rounds of tariffs, with bilateral consultations so far failing to stem the escalating trade war.
