Starting in October, pets must have a microchip to enter Uruguay

Pets must have individual electronic identification (microchip) and the International Health Certificate issued by Senasa to enter Uruguay from the Monday 1 2018 October.

The owner or person responsible for the animal must present the original copy and a copy of the certificate of identification of the animal by microchip carried out by a registered veterinary professional at the Senasa office, according to information from Senasa.

This certificate must include the date of implantation, the animal's details, the microchip number, the signature and stamp of the professional..

Microchip reading will be carried out at the border crossings of the neighbouring country. This new requirement is added to those already established for entering the neighbouring country with a pet.

Established requirements 

In order to enter a dog or cat domestic to Uruguay, it is necessary to obtain a certificate from the corresponding official body of the country (Ministry of Livestock and/or Agriculture, etc.). 

This certificate must contain the following:

  • that the animal is free of communicable diseases
  • that does not present clinical signs of any disease specific to its species
  • that is vaccinated against rabies (if older than 3 months)

Rabies vaccination must be carried out at least 30 days before the date of transfer, or at most one year before the date mentioned.

The certificate must state the Identification of the owner of the animal and the animal, as expressed below:

1. FROM THE OWNER OF THE ANIMAL

  • full name
  • residence address

2. OF THE ANIMAL

  • name
  • raza
  • sex
  • birthdate
  • size
  • fur
  • distinctive features
