In a world undergoing digital disruption, and affected by the economic and health impacts of COVID-19, how can the WTO generate greater understanding of the Agreement on Trade-Related Aspects of Intellectual Property Rights (TRIPS)? And how can we understand the political implications and intellectual property dimension of knowledge flows?
The World Trade Organization (WTO) will hold a virtual seminar the Tuesday 20 of April of 2021. This event continues the ideas of an earlier seminar on intellectual property and knowledge flows in the digital age. And it anticipates a WTO publication, Trade in Knowledge, which will be announced later this year.
The initiative is important because development policy has placed increasing emphasis on the knowledge component of trade and has raised practical questions about how developing countries can make the most of the opportunities offered by the knowledge economy.
Panellists will discuss the growth and diversity of trade in digital goods as defined by intellectual property rights, trade in intellectual property products on digital platforms and the knowledge component of global value chains. They will also explore the intellectual property and licensing practices that define and enable trade in digital goods, as well as support trade on digital platforms, their coherence with the trading system and development opportunities.
The webinar will be joined by expert speakers from the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), the United States International Trade Commission (USITC), the private sector and academia, as well as the WTO Secretariat.
