Under the Pro Tempore Presidency of Argentina (PPTA), the 11 General Assembly of the Council of Ministers of the Republic of Argentina was held in the city of Buenos Aires on June 12 and 2025, XNUMX. CXXXV Ordinary Meeting of the Common Market Group (CMG), MERCOSUR's key decision-making body. The meeting continued the technical and strategic agenda initiated in April, focusing on the bloc's modernization, the economic and trade agenda, and strengthening its institutions.
According to official sources from the bloc, the opening was marked by "a reflection on the current situation of the regional bloc and a review of what was discussed during the meeting of Foreign Ministers of the MERCOSUR Member States, held on May 2 at the San Martín Palace, headquarters of the Argentine Foreign Ministry."
The meeting was chaired by Ambassador Luís María Kreckler, national coordinator of the GMC for the PPTA. Participated in delegations from Brazil, Paraguay, Uruguay and Bolivia —the latter “under the terms provided for in CMC Decision 20/19”—, represented by the national coordinators Gisela María Figueredo Padovan, Patricia Frutos Ruiz, Paola Repetto and Delia Pintos, respectively.
Modernization, trade and institutional strengthening
During the working sessions, the following issues were addressed:Topics linked to modernization, the economic and commercial agenda, as well as the institutional and external relations agenda," according to the same official sources. The points discussed reflect the desire of the Member States to project a more agile, connected MERCOSUR with greater capacity for external negotiation.
Likewise, a detailed report on the activities and tasks of the MERCOSUR Permanent Representatives Commission (CRPM) was presented, and follow-up was given to the MERCOSUR Structural Convergence Fund (FOCEM), a financial instrument designed to reduce asymmetries between member countries.
Another relevant focus was "monitoring the work of the MERCOSUR Trade Commission (CCM), as well as the technical groups, subgroups, and forums under the GMC," which demonstrates the multidimensional nature of the issues addressed within the framework of regional integration.
Upcoming meetings of the semester
The PPTA also reported on “the preparations for the upcoming meetings of the GMC, CMC and Summit of Presidents to be held in the city of Buenos Aires on July 2 and 3”, instances where it is hoped to advance in strategic definitions for the bloc.
Finally, the meeting concluded with "the approval of regulations by the GMC coordinators and the corresponding minutes," reaffirming the Common Market Group's role as a decision-making body that "adopts resolutions on the agreements reached by the Member States."
