Peru and Canada sign Mutual Recognition Agreement for Authorized Economic Operators

The National Superintendency of Customs and Tax Administration (SUNAT) and the Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) signed this Thursday (22.06.2022) a Mutual Recognition Agreement (MRA) for their Authorized Economic Operator (AEO) programs, the Peruvian tax collection agency reported.

The mutual recognition agreement between customs administrations will streamline trade flows between the two countries, simplifying customs procedures, speeding up imports and exports, and contributing to greater competitiveness through improved risk management and security systems in the logistics chain.

Official information said that the instrument was signed by the Deputy National Superintendent of Customs of SUNAT, Marilú Llerena Aybar and the Executive Vice President of the Canada Border Services Agency, Ted Gallivan, within the framework of the 139/140 sessions of the Council of the World Customs Organization (WCO), in Brussels (Belgium).

This agreement is the ninth signed by Peru, after doing so bilaterally with Korea, Uruguay, the United States and at a regional level with the countries of the Pacific Alliance (Chile, Mexico and Colombia), the Andean Community (Bolivia, Colombia, Ecuador), Brazil, Guatemala and among 11 countries in the Americas and the Caribbean region, extending the recognition of AEO companies with 15 customs administrations around the world.

What is an Authorized Economic Operator?

The OEA is defined in the WCO SAFE Standards Framework as a party involved in the international movement of goods, whatever its function, that complies with these logistics chain security standards.

It has become a Flagship Customs-Private Sector Partnership Program which work to strengthen the logistics chain and which allows companies certified by customs, after meeting the established requirements, to access a series of facilitation benefits.
