Peru and Brazil sign Agreement of Mutual Recognition of their OAS Programs

-

The customs authorities of Peru and Brazil signed a Mutual Recognition Agreement (MRA) of their Authorized Economic Operator (AEO) Programs, which will streamline and facilitate foreign trade operations between both countries, reported the National Superintendency of Customs and Tax Administration (SUNAT).

The agreement was signed this Friday (02.10.2020) between SUNAT and Receita Federal during a virtual meeting through the use of digital signatures, as part of the activities to commemorate a new institutional anniversary of the Peruvian customs service.

"This is the first agreement in the world that is signed digitally.", clarified Luis Enrique Vera Castillo, national superintendent of SUNAT.

The signing of the agreement will help facilitate private sector foreign trade with Brazil, providing reciprocal benefits to operators certified under such programs, allowing them to reduce costs and time in their activities, which will grant a higher level of competitiveness to Peruvian products.

In the import ranking, Brazil is the third economy with which Peru has these activities; while it is the eighth destination for our exports, making it an extremely important partner. Last year, trade between both countries exceeded 3,800 billion dollars, according to the information.

This agreement is the sixth signed by Peru, after having done so with Korea, Uruguay, the countries of the Pacific Alliance (Chile, Mexico and Colombia), the Andean Community (Bolivia, Colombia, Ecuador) and the United States.

The concept of authorized economic operator has its origin in the regulatory framework of the World Customs Organization (WCO) to ensure and facilitate global trade.
