Peru will host APEC in 2024

-

The Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation Forum (APEC) confirmed that Peru will host its main meeting in 2024, which will allow the country to "deepen its strategic positioning" in the region, the Ministry of Foreign Trade and Tourism (Mincetur) reported on Thursday (10.02.2022).

The statement added that the announcement came via a statement by the prime minister of Thailand, the leading economy in APEC this year.

In this regard, Minister Roberto Sánchez confirmed that Peru will chair the forum for the third time, having also hosted its main meeting in 2008 and 2016.

In this regard, he noted that his country maintains the "record" of eight years between presidencies, the shortest period in which an economy has returned to lead APEC and that in 2024 it will seek to deepen the consolidation of its strategic positioning in the Asia-Pacific, "the most dynamic region in the world."

Minister Sánchez said that Mincetur will continue to promote issues related to economic and social development, as well as aspects of inclusion through trade and tourism.

Mincetur added that the organization of APEC 2024 "will contribute to strengthening more inclusive trade for the benefit of the largest number of Peruvian micro, small and medium-sized enterprises, in addition to promoting" Peruvian exports and tourism.

He highlighted that during Peru's last APEC presidency in 2016, more than 130 meetings were held in cities across the country such as Arequipa, Iquitos, Lima, Piura, Tacna, Tarapoto and Trujillo.

He also said that the country's participation in APEC since 1998 "has been very beneficial" and that in 2021 trade with the forum's economies reached a record of 67.500 billion dollars.

That same year, 67,8% of Peru's international trade was carried out with that trade bloc.

Furthermore, Peruvian exports to the forum economies had an average annual growth of 2009% between 2020 and 6,1, and imports grew at an annual average of 6,3%.

48% of international tourists visiting Peru before the pandemic came from APEC member economies, so the ministry considered that hosting the forum in 2024 "will be a new opportunity to energize and reactivate these sectors at a national level."

The forum was founded in 1989 to consolidate the growth and prosperity of countries around the Pacific Ocean.

As such, APEC is made up of 21 Asia-Pacific economies, including Australia, Brunei, Canada, Chile, China, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Japan, Malaysia, Mexico, New Zealand, Papua New Guinea, Peru, the Philippines, Russia, Singapore, South Korea, Taiwan, Thailand, the United States and Vietnam.
