-

With the purpose of sharing initiatives to strengthen women's participation in border security, SUNAT, in its role as the WCO Regional Vice-Presidency for the Americas and the Caribbean, organized an event on July 12 and 13, 2023, in Lima (Peru).

The workshop «Women on Borders: Experiences and Challenges", which has had the support of the Committee
Inter-American Commission against Terrorism of the Organization of American States (CICTE-OAS), has been sponsored by the Government of Canada.

The event provided an opportunity for them to participate 23 countries of the Americas and the Caribbean. Two representatives from the Asia Pacific region also participated virtually (Australia and New Zealand) and one from the European region (United Kingdom).

During the opening ceremony of the workshop, the National Superintendent of SUNAT, Enrique Vera, and the Peruvian Minister of Women and Vulnerable Populations, Nancy Tolentino, also spoke. Also present were the Secretary for Multidimensional Security of the OAS, Iván Marques, as well as the Executive Secretary of the Inter-American Commission of Women of the OAS, Alejandra Mora, and the Assistant Secretary General of the World Customs Organization (WCO), Ricardo Treviño.

The two-day workshop provided delegates with the opportunity to hear from international organisations on challenges to advancing gender mainstreaming and women's participation in regional customs.

Participants also had the opportunity to receive “inspirational testimonials” as well as “experiences and lessons learned from the Cargo and Container Security Program.”

In addition, the event included the "Presentation of the Results of the Regional Survey» referring to the participation of women in the respective administrations.

This regional initiative is an important milestone, since -after the discussion of results and presentation of recommendations- the customs administrations established the "Regional Community of Women on Borders«.

It should be noted that the regional results of the data collected will be published on the Webcampus of the WCO Regional Vice-Presidency and will be sent to the member countries of the Americas and the Caribbean, SUNAT sources said.
