As part of the new activities as the Regional Customs Laboratory of the World Customs Organization (WCO) for the Americas and the Caribbean, Peru held the second webinar “Physical-chemical and instrumental analysis of textile and organic products” on Thursday, November 04, 2021, as reported by Sunat.

The online meeting was attended by more than 130 participants, mostly customs chemists, from 21 member countries in that region.

At the opening ceremony, the WCO Regional Vice President for the Americas and the Caribbean, Werner Ovalle, highlighted "the proactivity and commitment of Sunat" also highlighting the interest in sharing its experience to fostrengthen the technical capabilities of the region's laboratories.

In that line, Marilú Llerena, Deputy National Superintendent of Customs from Peru, stressed the importance of customs laboratories for the analysis of textile and organic products, whose role is to aensure proper tariff classification and collection, contributing to fair competition. At the same time, the Minister expressed his firm commitment to make the experience and facilities of the Peruvian Customs Laboratory available to WCO Members in the Americas and the Caribbean, in order to improve the exchange of information in this region.

Meanwhile, Director of the Tariff and Trade Affairs Directorate, Konstantinos Kaiopoulos, expressed support for the OMA to the capacity-building activities of customs laboratory professionals and noted that since its recognition as a WCO Regional Customs Laboratory, the Sunat Customs Laboratory has held two training events with great participation at the regional level.

It is worth remembering that Peru's central laboratory, located in Callao, was awarded the "regional" designation by the WCO in December 2020, being the first to receive this designation in South America, due to the fact that it uses best practices, cutting-edge technology and merchandise analysis techniques to combat customs fraud.
