The government of Panama signed this Monday (07.02.2022/XNUMX/XNUMX) a Letter of Intent with the Kingdom of Belgium to strengthen and deepen cooperation between the customs administrations of both countries, as well as to better address the challenges arising from illegal cross-border trafficking.
His signature was headed by the Director General of the National Customs Authority of Panama, Tayra Barsallo and the General Administrator of Customs and Excise of the Kingdom of Belgium, Kristian Vanderwaeren. This document arises due to the “continuous increase in findings of trafficking in narcotics, psychotropic substances and precursors, as well as weapons, explosives, chemical, biological and nuclear substances, endangered species and dangerous goods that constitute a danger for both countries,” according to the statement.
The event on Monday also included a Complimentary tour of the Port of Balboa, which ended the scanner area where officials from the Container Technical Unit, led by the Director General, presented to the visitors a non-intrusive cargo inspection operation through scanners and the entire procedure involved when irregularities are detected.
The National Customs Authority of Panama is managing projects such as the creation of the Control and Monitoring Center, as well as the installation of some 16 scanners nationwide at checkpoints, to reinforce its work in terms of security.
According to official information, the international delegation was also attended by the Director of Customs appointed in Rotterdam, Jan Kamp.
