The Andean Community agreed to begin a process of modernization and reform

The Andean Community of Nations (CAN) decided last week in New York, United States, to begin the process of modernization and reform of the organization, whose pro tempore presidency has been headed by Peru since last August.

Through a statement released on September 21, the CAN reported that The decision was adopted by the foreign ministers of Bolivia, Rogelio Mayta; Colombia, Álvaro Leyva; Ecuador, Juan Carlos Holguín; and Peru, César Landa; in addition to the secretary general of the Lima-based organization, Jorge Hernández Pedraza.

The respective conversations took place during the Extraordinary Meeting of the Andean Council of Foreign Ministers, in the framework of the 77th session of the United Nations General Assembly, highlighted the text.

Thus, the foreign ministers decided to establish a special consultation and negotiation group with the mandate to evaluate the reform, modernization and strengthening of the Andean Community, in the context of changes taking place at the subregional, regional and global levels.

They agreed that "This The working group will be made up of two delegates from the Member States, who will begin their work immediately in accordance with a consultation process and on the basis of consensus and will also submit periodic reports to the foreign ministers."

On this, they pointed out that "They will complete their work within a period of no more than four months, with the support of the General Secretariat.«.

The The foreign ministers also decided, within the scope of joint foreign policy, to "establish a mechanism for consultation and coordination in international, subregional, regional and global organizations.".

Taking this decision into account, the Andean bloc continues to advance in the articulation of its agenda towards the consolidation of the integration process.
