After having held a meeting with the Directors of Customs of the Americas and the Caribbean, the Regional Vice President of the World Customs Organization and Superintendent of SAT Guatemala, Werner Ovalle, met, by videoconference, with the Secretary General of the WCO, Kunio Mikuriya. The objective was to address issues related to the customs agenda to be dealt with in the upcoming meetings of the Policy Commission and the Council., which will be held in December 2020.
The meeting on Tuesday (24.11.2020) between the two was confirmed by official sources and had the purpose of exchanging information on the advances of the following regional customs initiatives:
- Regional Mutual Recognition Agreement
- Central American Regional Study on Temporary Releases
- Results of meetings held with regional organizations
Additionally, the following were discussed: customs requests for accreditation:
- Argentina requested the status of “OMA Regional Dog Training Center” for its current Training Center.
- Peru has requested the status of “WCO Regional Customs Laboratory” for its Central Laboratory.
Ovalle had a meeting with the Customs authorities of the Americas and the Caribbean last November 16th, who showed interest in being an active part of the meetings and activities that are coordinated.
Recall that Guatemala assumed the position of Regional Vice-Presidency in 2020 until 2022 to represent the WCO and all customs agencies on the continent. For this reason, it is responsible for promoting initiatives and policies that are promoted by the region and addressed to the General Secretariat of the WCO.
