The World Trade Organization (WTO) is determined to promote a Greater coherence in decarbonisation rules and the iron and steel sector; for this reason the WTO Secretariat will carry out the March 9th an event with the participation of stakeholders from all over the world.
With that feature open, the “Trade Forum on Decarbonisation Standards: Promoting Coherence and Transparency in the Steel Sector” will foster multi-stakeholder dialogue on the role of consistent and transparent standards in accelerating the scaling up of low-carbon steelmaking technologies and avoiding trade frictions.
To this end, WTO Members, representatives of industry, standard-setting bodies and international organizations, and academic experts will meet to exchange views on this matter.
The activity will be developed through two panels which will examine current progress in setting emissions caps for the steel industry, the challenges faced by developing countries, and opportunities to boost global transparency and coherence in decarbonisation rules.
The event will be held in person at the WTO headquarters in Geneva, Switzerland, and will be broadcast live.
It will build on the WTO Secretariat's analytical work on carbon rules, mainly contained in the Trade and Climate Change Briefing Note series and the World Trade Report 2022, which highlights the risk of fragmentation of emerging climate-related climate measures, such as carbon pricing systems and carbon rules.
