WTO publishes a new edition of tariff profiles around the world

-

In a joint effort between the World Trade Organization (WTO), the International Chamber of Commerce (ICC) and the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD), the new edition of the tariff profiles of the 170 WTO members plus other countries and customs territories has been released, in order to review the access of goods to markets.

Those interested in consulting these tariff profiles will find tables summarizing, by country, the average or maximum "bound" tariff that each economy can apply to its imports and the average tariff that it applies in practice.

La publication It comes in five parts main. The Part It shows summary tariff statistics for all countries and territories for all products, as well as a breakdown of agricultural and non-agricultural products.

La second For each of these countries and territories, the report presents a full page with a breakdown by sector and range of work. It also contains a section on the conditions of access to trade that they face in their respective main export markets.

La third part covers information on non-tariff measures that are of increasing importance in world trade patterns, such as reductions in tariff rates that over several rounds of multilateral negotiations have reduced the impact of tariffs.

La fourth part develops the special theme that it presents in each edition; this year it corresponds to the non-tariff measures. The WTO reports that using data from UNCTAD's Trade Analysis Information System (TRAINS), this chapter analyses three indicators of the use of NTMs: the frequency index, the coverage rate and the prevalence score. These indicators reveal the percentage of products affected by NTMs, the share of trade subject to NTMs and how many measures apply to a particular product group. It reveals that almost 60 per cent of imported products are required to comply with at least one NTM. In terms of trade value, almost 80 per cent of imported products are subject to NTMs.

The annexes are located in the fifth part, and include data sources and the compilation of “Frequently Asked Questions”. (WTO Press Release)
