The World Trade Organization (WTO) has scheduled a formal meeting of the General Council for the Next days 28 and 29 November, in order to discuss the continuation of Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala in her position as Director General.
This meeting comes after the Chairman of the WTO General Council, Ambassador Petter Ølberg (Norway), announced on 9 November that no further applications for the post had been received by the 8 November deadline. WTO Members were also informed that Okonjo-Iweala is the only candidate. The Director-General expressed her willingness to take on a second four-year term in a letter to the President on 16 September.
As a result, Ambassador Ølberg reported that, given the absence of alternative candidates and following previous precedents, will propose this special meeting for members to evaluate and discuss the future leadership of the organization.
According to the WTO, the meeting will allow Okonjo-Iweala to present her vision on the Organization's upcoming challenges, opening the first day with a presentation followed by a question-and-answer session. During the second day, members will take a formal decision on her continuation as Director-General, whose current term ends on August 31, 2025.
It is recalled that the appointment is made by a decision adopted by consensus by the General Council, which is made up of all WTO Members.
