WCO strengthens cooperation with Swedish agency to tackle illegal wildlife trade

-

The World Customs Organization (WCO) has renewed its partnership with the Swedish International Development Agency (SADI) in its efforts to curb illegal wildlife trade, through the launch of a new project.

The WCO statement said that “The environmental project officially begins on September 1, 2021 for an expected duration of two years.".

The WCO also explains that "the initiative aims to strengthen the law enforcement capacities of a number of customs administrations in Eastern and Southern Africa to carry out more effective operations against illegal wildlife trade, addressing issues of international and inter-agency cooperation, risk management and operational capabilities with a specific focus on data collection, analysis and sharing".

It warns that illegal wildlife trade negatively affects not only the environment but also economic and social development, as well as the national and international security of member countries. In this regard, the WCO commented that “law enforcement agencies are in the spotlight in the fight against this global scourge, and Customs plays a critical role in identifying, intercepting and prosecuting illegal shipments of cross-border wildlife trade.".

The Organization's environmental programme has a long history of success in supporting customs administrations to curb such illegal trade and enforce the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES), especially under the auspices of the INAMA Project (an initiative focused on strengthening the capacities of customs administrations in countries in Asia, South America and sub-Saharan Africa) and the International Consortium on Combating Wildlife Crime.WCO Press Release)
