New meeting of the Director of Customs of Uruguay with delegates of the Container Control Program

In order to advance the implementation of the Global Container Control Programs (CCP) in Uruguay, the National Director of Customs, Jaime Borgiani, received this Thursday (02.11.2021) a Delegation of this Program of the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) and the World Customs Organization (WCO), in the city of Montevideo.

According to the statement, the delegation was made up of Nick Cole, Coordinator of the Programme for the Region (UNODC), Jorge Vargas, Deputy Coordinator of the Programme for the Region (UNODC) and Cesar Schiaffino, Trainer of the Programme for the Region (OMA). Meanwhile, representing Uruguay, in addition to the National Director, the manager of Customs Operations Management, Andrés Mendez, the manager of Control and Risk Management, Diego Casella and the person in charge of the International Affairs Advisory Service, Laura Dighiero, participated in the opening.

The official text specifies that the The main objective of CPP is to minimize the use of maritime containers for illicit drug trafficking and other transnational organized crime activities, as well as promote training activities focused on strengthening institutional capacities for the inspection, surveillance and control of maritime cargo containers.

Within this framework, the programme has a global reach and aims to strengthen the structures and processes that enable the application of sustainable laws for the selected States and ports. In this way, it facilitates cooperation against crime between States and international bodies involved in the regulation of container traffic.

It also seeks to maintain strategic alliances with various security bodies within the States with operational ports, including Customs, the Police, Institutions related to the Maritime sector and the private sector.

It is also designed to strengthen and promote partnerships between customs, trade and law enforcement in an effort to prevent trade abuse in illicit activities.

At the same time, it makes an effort to eradicate inter-institutional distrust and corruption that can hinder the effective implementation of the program.Press release from the DNA of Uruguay)
