Europe launches modern risk management system that helps customs exchange information in real time

-

The European Commission has launched a new Customs Risk Management System (CRMS2) to strengthen EU customs controls and protect its citizens and businesses, as well as its financial interests, according to an official statement.

According to reports, the new Customs Risk Management System will officially start operating on January 1, 2022. The same official text explained that this risk management “facilitates the real time exchange of risk-related information between customs administrations”

In this regard, the Commissioner for the Economy, Paolo Gentiloni, said: “The launch of this new system will bring immense benefits to European customs authorities. It will mean that when dangerous goods are stopped at one point on the EU’s external border, this information will be instantly shared between customs offices across the Union.” He added that “it will give a major boost to our fight against fraud and our efforts to keep our citizens safe.”

In this regard, the new Customs Risk Management System covers a wide range of potential risks, such as security risks related to explosives, security risks related to health, the environment or product safety, financial and commercial risks, including intellectual property rights and cash controls.

“Information sharing has proven particularly useful during the COVID-19 pandemic, when large quantities of medical supplies must be quickly reviewed and cleared for use,” the statement said.

As it reads: “the new Customs Risk Management System connects the customs community of the 27 Member States of the European Union”. This includes all international ports, airports, major land border posts and all national risk analysis centres. A total of approximately 900 customs offices and national centres and 6.500 customs officers and risk experts are connected to this modern process., which covers all parts of the external border of the European States.

It should be noted that the role of customs in border control has changed dramatically as a result of technological advances. This new EU method of operation demonstrates how customs administrations are moving from traditional gatekeeper-style controls to a risk-based system.Statement from the European Union)
