New WCO publication on sustainability

-

The World Customs Organization has released a publication today (01.02.2021). The aim is to disseminate its initiatives and programmes, while also making known the relevant tools to strengthen the capacity of Members, in order to achieve economic, social and environmental objectives at national, regional and global levels.

The publication titled “Customs foster sustainability for people, prosperity and the planet” It is designed as a look back at the WCO theme for the year 2020., the information says.

The Brussels-based organisation clarifies that the above initiatives have contributed to the WCO’s commitment to sustainability goals, which began more than a decade ago with the WCO agenda theme for 2009: “Customs and the environment: protecting our natural heritage” and was confirmed by the theme chosen for 2018: “A safe business environment for economic development”.

Along these lines, throughout 2020, initiatives have been carried out that also served as an opportunity to reflect on the role of Customs in ensuring an effective and equitable transition towards a more inclusive, sustainable and ecological supply chain.

On this basis, the WCO remains firmly committed to addressing sustainability-related challenges, selecting as its theme for 2021: “Customs strengthening recovery, renewal and resilience for a sustainable supply chain".

“As we embark on this endeavour, Customs performance can and should be linked to these objectives and should help build a more resilient, innovative and sustainable future,” the WCO concludes.

At a time when confidence in the effectiveness of measures taken by countries to address current emergencies is declining, the impact of customs action on achieving global sustainable development goals can help governments foster changes for a better future.
