The Mercosur countries have expressed their interest in promoting negotiations for the signing of a free trade agreement with Panama, the Panamanian Foreign Ministry reported.
Argentina, Brazil, Paraguay and Uruguay delivered a document to the Panamanian Minister of Foreign Affairs, Alejandro Ferrer, who described the proposal as a highly relevant political message for his country, according to the Paraguayan Information Agency.
The ambassadors who participated in the meeting are: Marcelo Luco, from the Republic of Argentina; Glivania María De Oliveira, from the Federative Republic of Brazil; and Ambassador Ramona Franco Oxley, from the Oriental Republic of Uruguay.
During the meeting, the Panamanian foreign minister was informed of the interest of the Mercosur member countries in Carry out negotiations leading to the signing of a free trade agreement with Panama, given the special importance that this trade bloc assigns to this initiative, by submitting the initial proposal for the terms of reference for said document.
Panamanian Minister Alejandro Ferrer, who was accompanied on the occasion by Vice-Chancellor Federico Alfaro Boyd, expressed his gratitude on behalf of his government for the initiative and stated that this is a political message from Mercosur of great importance for his country.
The Foreign Ministry also indicated that it would immediately submit the document for consideration to the President of the Republic, Laurentino Cortizo, and to the Council of Ministers, in the assurance that the proposal will be studied with special interest.
