Mercosur and Indonesia discuss economic agreement

The Paraguayan Foreign Ministry reported that representatives of Mercosur and Indonesia held a virtual meeting on Monday (06.06.2022) in order to plan future negotiations for a Economic Partnership Agreement, which was announced by the foreign ministers on December 16, 2021.

According to the statement, the Mercosur States (Argentina, Brazil, Paraguay and Uruguay) and Indonesia agreed on the benefits of strengthening trade relations and investment flows between both regions through a broad and balanced agreement. At the meeting Preparatory work has begun for the first round of negotiations in the second half of this year..

Indonesia is the largest economy in Southeast Asia and home to 270 million people, making it a market of interest for Mercosur in terms of trade and investment.

The Paraguayan delegation was headed by Ambassador Enrique Franco, Director General of Economic Policy, who was accompanied by representatives of the Ministry of Finance, Ministry of Industry and Commerce, Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock and the National Customs Directorate.

Representing the other States Parties to Mercosur were Minister Sergio Iaciuk from Argentina, Minister Philip Fox-Drummond Gough from Brazil, and Minister Counsellor Carolina Villarrubia from Uruguay. The Indonesian delegation was led by Mr. Johni Martha from the Ministry of Commerce.
