Mercosur and the Eurasian Economic Commission signed a memorandum of understanding on Monday (17.12.2018) in Montevideo, which will frame cooperation and the exchange of goods and services between the parties.
Rodolfo Nin Novoa, as representative of Uruguay, which holds the temporary presidency of Mercosur, signed the text of the agreement between the blocs together with the Minister of Commerce of the Eurasian Economic Commission, Veronika Nikishina, at the previous meeting of the Common Market Group of Mercosur, which is being held in Montevideo. The event was also attended by the foreign ministers Jorge Faurie, from Argentina, and Aloysio Nubes Ferreira, from Brazil, and the vice-foreign minister of Paraguay, Hugo Saguier, the Presidency of the Eastern country said.
The two blocs involved in the memorandum account for more than 6,5% of global gross domestic product., with economic complementarities that open up great opportunities for both, Nin Novoa pointed out. The document identifies thematic areas and common objectives to increase trade and employment, he added.
The Eurasian Economic Commission is the supranational governing body of the Eurasian Economic Union, which consists of Russia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Armenia and Kyrgyzstan., which cover 20,3 million square kilometres of territory and 182 million inhabitants.
Nikishina, for her part, thanked Uruguay for its initiative and the support of the other Mercosur member countries in bringing the parties together and signing the document after four years of work. She also assured that the signing of this text is the beginning of the rapprochement of the parties, international cooperation and the diversification of trade.
