Mercosur advances in negotiations with Singapore for a free trade agreement

In the framework of the V round of negotiations taking place this week in Singapore, the chief negotiators of the Southern Common Market (MERCOSUR) held a meeting with the Minister of State for Industry and Trade of the aforementioned country, Alvin Tan, and with the Undersecretary of Trade, Jane Lim, with whom they discussed the progress of the talks aimed at concluding a free trade agreement between both parties.

The MERCOSUR delegation – a bloc under the pro tempore presidency of Paraguay – was led by Ambassador Enrique Franco, Director General of Economic Policy of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, who was accompanied by the chief negotiators of Argentina, Brazil and Uruguay and their respective delegations.

Representatives of MERCOSUR and Singapore They agreed on the strategic importance of this agreement, at a historic moment of post-pandemic recovery and uncertainties affecting the global economy, thus sending a clear message of commitment to peace and confidence in a rules-based multilateral trading system.

The work of the various negotiating groups in the Asian country will continue until Friday (13.05.2022), and the next rounds of negotiations are scheduled in Asunción at the end of May and June respectively.

Paraguayan authorities are interested in completing this round of negotiations before their mandate at the head of MERCOSUR ends this semester, according to official sources.
